Upcycled Floating Island, A Man-Made Island Featuring Pinky and Her New House's Housewarming Party

Sunway Lagoon has a surprise for their one and only gibbon princess, Pinky as she has moved to her new house that located in a man-made island known as the Upcycled Floating Island. It was Pinky's House Warming Party yesterday that held at Sunway Lagoon and thanks for the invitation that allowed me to witness the launching together with Sunway Lagoon's distinguished guests and the other members of the media.

Introduction of Pinky, the White-Handed Gibbon

Pinky is the 15 years old white-handed gibbon that is really smart and playful. She is also known as the lar gibbon (Hylobates lar), an endangered primate from the gibbon family, Hylobatidae. The fur coloring of the gibbon varies from black and dark-brown to light-brown, sandy colors. Their hands and feet are white in color, likewise a ring of white hair surrounded the black face.

Members of media has arrived at Sunway Lagoon as early as 9.30 A.M for the registration purpose and great job to Sunway Lagoon organizing committee for adhering to the Standard Operating Procedure that set by the government. We observed the social distancing, temperature check and check-in with our MySejahtera apps.

The friendly staff led us to the Media Waiting Area for our light breakfast while waiting for everyone to arrived as the event starts at 10.00 A.M.

After the breakfast, we were escorted by the team to the Housewarming Launching Party site just right behind the Media Waiting Area. The entire background was covered with the huge black curtain with the smaller one underneath the shelter. This must be the gimmick for the launching, right?

The event kick start with a quick introduction by the emcee and invited Mr. Magendran, the Assistance General Manager of Sunway Lagoon for this opening and launching speech.

The Upcycled Floating Island Project was developed with the goal of waste avoidance through upcycling our scrap into something useful. Today, after almost 14 months with the cost of RM150,000.00, we have successfully constructed this island with 1.5 tons of discarded waste material, that otherwise would have gone to the landfills. These items include the Styrofoam, scrap metal, plastic bottles and chlorine drums.

There is simply no such things as a safe landfill. No matter how many barriers, liners and pipes we install to mitigate the risks, landfills will always leak toxic chemicals into the soil and water. As a results, this will pollutes the land which our food is grown and contaminates the water sources.

In addition, the land is a finite resource as the more land that is converted into landfills, the lesser land that will be available as vital habitats for millions of species and important sources of clean air for all. 

One of the targets in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG 15), Life on Land is to take urgent and significant action to reduce the degradation of the natural habitats, halt the loss of biodiversity and to protect & prevent  the extinction of threatened species.

This Upcycled Floating Island initiative is align with the SDG15 by way of providing home to Pinky, an endangered primate by using the upcycled materials. The project also goes towards supporting Sunway Group's Sustainable Development efforts that is emphasized in the Group's Vision statement, to be Asia's model corporation in sustainable development, innovating to enrich lives for a better tomorrow.

"Sunway Lagoon believes that urgent action must be taken to reduce the loss of natural habitats and biodiversity. This product will be first of will be the first of many projects that we will undertake as our responsibility to address and reinforce our commitment to the UNSDGs, by raising awareness on waste management and taking action to reduce our waste to the landfill", said Mr. Magendran, the Assistance General Manager of Sunway Lagoon.

Followed by a speech by Mr. Cheng Jew Keng, the Chief Operating Officer of Sunway Property and Facility Management before they officially launched the Pinky's Housewarming Party.

The tour continued where Mr. Calvin Ho, the Senior General Manager briefed the distinguished guests and members of the media regarding the Upcycled Floating Island model and showed the real floating island on the Wildlife Park Lake.

Besides the Housewarming of Pinky's new home, Sunway Lagoon also introduced another two new experiences for Sunway Lagoon visitor, the Fish Feeding and the Pontoon Boat Tour. 

A shallow platform was installed just next to the Pinky's new home and visitor can feed the fishes around this platform area. You can have peace of mind to let your children or yourself enjoying this newly installed attraction as life guards will be there to enjoy everyone's safety. 

After completed my fish feeding session, the Sunway Lagoon team also showed me the place where I can clean my feet after soaked in the lake water. So thoughtful.

Just right on-time, we were invited by the Sunway Lagoon crew for the Tale of Mount Berapi show located at the Wildlife Theatre. The show started at 11.30 A.M. and the entire show took around 10 minutes showcasing a gifted princess was born into the family and story of her life. At the end of the session, visitors were given a chance to took pictures with the casts.
