The collaboration allows the TARUC research team to conduct a research program using the soil samples to study the effects of variables on the growth and health of the durian tree. Through this program, LKE intends to gain better understanding on the best scientific approach to growing and caring for durian trees.
YBhg. Dato' Zahimi bin Hassan, Director-General of Agriculture (DOA) |
I am confident and I believe that the adaptation of modern agricultural technology along this value chain can increase the productivity and quality of local durian fruit production for the global market. said YBhg. Dato' Zahimi bin Hassan, Director-General of Agriculture (DOA).
This launching event is significant because of the collaboration between the agricultural industry players with Department of Agriculture to develop the agrofood sector inline with the National Agrofood Policy, 2021 - 2030 (NAP 2.0) [Dasar Agromakanan Negara, 2021 - 2030 (DAN 2.0)].
The agricultural sector has grown positively in line with the overflow of the agricultural economy through the opportunity to penetrate the global market with the increasing demands. The crops that is gaining attention domestically and internationally is the King of Fruit market, the durian.
The durian market has successfully penetrated multiple countries like China, Taiwan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Singapore, Vietnam and Japan. For the record, the export of durian in 2015 was worth RM 64.9 million and increased to RM 74.2 million in 2020. Interestingly, the demand in the durian market is projected to be worth USD 30 billion in 2025.
The approach implemented by LKE coincides with smart synergies to drive the development of a sustainable agricultural ecosystem through close cooperation between departments, institutions of higher learning, and the private sector that can maximize the economic sustainability value of the country's agro-food sector. YBhg. Dato' Zahimi bin Hassan, Director-General of Agriculture (DOA) concluded.
