Dear Readers,
Sustainability Hunt 2023 Was Successfully Held On 24th June 2023 For The 2nd Year By Alam Flora With A Total Of 32 Participants From Different Backgrounds To Convey Messages Of Environmental Sustainability
Have you heard about the disturbing news that was released earlier this year where Malaysia will be run out of space in 2050 for our daily waste as in average we produced about 38,000 metric tonnes of solid wastes, a day!
How much is 38,000 metric tonnes a day? Just a fun fact released by Alam Flora Sdn Bhd is that the waste of just 2,500 tonnes a day can easily pile up to the height of our iconic Petronas Twin Towers. Can you imagine that?
Sustainability Hunt 2023
The situation is truly worrying, right? Would you want your kids, our future generations to live together with the daily waste?
When I saw the promotional campaign for Sustainability Hunt 2023, I immediately agreed to be part of this amazing event. It is time for me to learn and implement this knowledge in my daily life.
Yes, the action of a person might be little, but collectively as a whole to the entire Earth, we can make a huge difference. So, what is this Sustainability Hunt 2023 all about?
The Sustainability Hunt 2023 was successfully held on 24 June 2023 at Fasiliti Inovasi Kitar Semua (FIKS) Precinct 5, Putrajaya with a total of 32 participants from the general public, mainstream media, social media community networks including Key Opinion Leaders (KOL), social media influencers, and bloggers.
The aim of the Sustainability Hunt 2023 is to encourage community participation in cultivating environmental conservation in daily life through education, which has been achieved when participants' shared the information on their social media platforms during the event day for public awareness.
Before all participants were ready to complete the tasks assigned for the Sustainability Hunt 2023, an introduction was given by a representative from Alam Flora Sdn Bhd, followed by warm-up session, then the group disclosure and here we go, the flag off session.

A total of 5 tasks where 4 need to be completed on the spot with 1 task has been completed before the event day. Oh yes, I was assigned to Team 2 together with Auntie Purple, Satthiya Kandi, Ziafmihar, Livelifelah, SunshineKelly, and Dr. Ej.
Task 1: Trash Or Treasure
It is true that YOUR TRASH IS ANOTHER MAN'S TREASURE. I remember when I was young, I always collect aluminum cans, boxes, and all recyclable items to be sold to the collectors with the initiative from my grandma. With the money from this activity, we go for nice meals. How great is that, right?
Back to the event! Quiz questions were given to all participants and everyone need to figure out the recyclable items. Participants will need to bring these treasure items from home and make a transaction by selling these items at the Buy-Back Center.
From the items that I collected and brought to this event, I manage to make RM 2.15 by selling off the cans, boxes, tetra packs, papers, and plastic bottles. What are you waiting for? Start considering turning your daily domestic wastes into the treasure that you, yourself will excite about it in return.
It is time for us to create awareness that all used items also deserve a second chance! Let's recycle your trash by sending it to the Buy Back Centre near you today!
Task 2: Upcycling
Recycling has been a topic of discussion, even in educational syllabus since our childhood, agreed? But, have you heard about upcycling before? To be honest, the word "Upcycling" is kind of new to me.
In general, upcycling is to reuse discarded objects or material in a way that we create a new product of higher quality or value than its original by giving a second chance to a new function rather than just disposing of it as trash. In other words, we refashion it with the same material with greater value.
@kitkat_nelfei No room for trash in Malaysia by 2050? Have you heard about this headline recently? . I am excited to share that we can actually make a huge difference together for a better Earth, oh yes not only for us but also future generations with simple gestures! . Let’s practice Upcycling! Transform wastes into something more valuable than its current form! . For example, I made a new space for my new baby turtle with these two items that I was supposed to discard to the trash! . Anyway, there are more and let’s share creative ideas! @alamflorasdnbhd . #AlamFloraSustainabilityHunt2023 #WorldEnvironmentDay #JomRawatBumi #EnhancingLifeEnrichingCommunities #FIKS #3RonWheels ♬ original sound - KitKat Nelfei
The objective of Upcycling as the second task is to create awareness and provide easy ideas to the public to start 'upcycling' from home instead of simply throwing things away.
One of my ideas is to convert two disposal items (a Styrofoam box and plastic cans) into a mini aquarium for my little turtle.
Anything will do and you should try out this too!
Task 3: Go Green
Task 3 is about Go Green where one of the items from the "Treasure Item" will be reused, also a similar concept with upcycling as a plant container. Looking at the items, tetrapak is the best item for this purpose. the
Tetrapak can be used as a container as a planting site before we transfer the seedlings to a larger pot, normally after 1 week. The best part is this container can be reused for few times, at no cost since we are upcycling it. A good way of saving nature and our pocket too, right?
This planting container is suitable for any plants that are herbs with simple care and can be used in cooking or daily use such as mint and basil leaves.
Task 4: Recycle Master
Recycle is something that we are familiar with, but waste segregation by category is also important in order for us to sort and separate waste types to facilitate recycling and correct onward disposal.
The purpose of Recycle Master task is to ensure that participants have knowledge of waste segregation by category and to practice this habit in their daily lives. For example, plastic bottles and food waste need to be separated and placed in separate garbage bags.
There are several categories such as
- Food waste (even plastic bottles with food leftover should go to this category)
- Plastic
- Metal
- E-waste
- Glass
- Box

Task 5: Sustainability Champion
The last task for Sustainability Hunt 2023 is the Sustainability Champion station where participants need to scan the QR code for an interactive quiz related to general questions about environmental sustainability.
Environmental Sustainability is another effort from everyone to incorporate eco-friendly practices that will help to reduce carbon footprint so that we are able to maintain the ecological balance of the natural environment and conserve natural resources to support the well-being of now and future generations.
Hence, the questions are revolving around energy usage, recycling practices, shopping habits, and many more. It is also time for us to start exploring these efforts and make a culture of sustainability in our daily lives.
Participants Focus To Answer Questions About Environmental Sustainability |
After each task is completed, the participant is required to prepare and upload their sharing on social media platforms and these postings will be given points by the dedicated judging panel from the organizing team members.
I think that Sustainability Hunt 2023 is a true success since the aim has been successfully achieved, for both participants and the public as well. I did not return home with empty hands, as the knowledge gained from this event is precious and worth sharing with my family and friends.
Just like what I mentioned before, together we can make a huge difference to make Earth a better place to stay for now and future generations.
Special Thanks To My Wonderful Team Members (TEAM 2) For Making The Experience During The Event A Great One |
